We are tracking the traces of him down to find the impressive places of remembrance in the Odenwald.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He is just one person among many. Anyhow, the book\u2019s authors gave him a distinguished light-beige colour on the black-and-white cover photograph. In the spring of 1930, the Elferrat (council of eleven) are on their way through the town of Buchen on the occasion of the carnival processions. They wear toppers, paper flowers and fool\u2019s caps. You can see the merry scene depicted on an old photograph. But one person is different: Jacob Mayer (1866-1939) is right in the middle of the crowd, however, not a real part of it. His exclusion because of his Jewish background will start soon. Exclusion from the Elferrat. From the clubs. From society. It already belonged to the holdings, of course. \u201cHowever, Jacob Mayer\u2019s tragic story is probably the most well-known Jewish story of our town today,\u201d says the town archivist, who has cultivated a special culture of reminder together with volunteers: An underground memorial in the vault of a former synagogue is not the only feature of the small town in the Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis district\u2014there is this little, exquisite Jewish specialist library. A few kilometres away, there is one of the most impressive Jewish cemeteries in the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region. A few metres from there, Hermann Schmerbeck or another of the volunteers stands waiting for visitors at the lending desk of the former Beginenkl\u00f6sterle convent every Thursday afternoon: The town\u2019s historical, red-sandstone building has turned into a place of encounter and remembrance, since the priest Herbert Duffner gave his private library about Judaism to a foundation in 1998. Presentations and conversation take place regularly in the plain reading rooms at number 6 Obergasse alley\u2014Jewish studies scholars come here for a few weeks to do research on a certain topic.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The appearance of the library from the outside with its deep window jambs and the old gate is still very much that of the former convent of nuns, whereas the inside of the reading rooms has been designed in a more functional way, except for the sacred room: The Buchen music school uses the room to hold concerts and do rehearsals. And, upon the library\u2019s invitation, an occasional Klezmer group performs in the small apse with its choir niches that are covered with frescos.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Priest Herbert selected in a well-directed manner and out of an intellectual motivation\u2014not always in a systematic way though.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You can borrow from a selection of about 9,000 books plus diapositives and CDs in the library that Hermann adapted over a period of several weekends with the assistance of a team of locals and the Brunswick specialist in Jewish studies Rebekka Denz, drawing up a professional online catalogue. \u201cPriest Herbert selected in a well-directed manner and out of an intellectual motivation\u2014not always in a systematic way though,\u201d says Hermann, who was on hand straight away, when at the end of the 90s there was demand for a voluntary manager for the Jewish library. \u201cBack then, I was just about to go into retirement and I was happy to have a new area of responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wosonst.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wosonstj\u00fcdischesLebeninBuchen20HermannSchmerbeck.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9633 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wosonst.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wosonstj\u00fcdischesLebeninBuchen20HermannSchmerbeck.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wosonst.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wosonstj\u00fcdischesLebeninBuchen20HermannSchmerbeck.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wosonst.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wosonstj\u00fcdischesLebeninBuchen20HermannSchmerbeck-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wosonst.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wosonstj\u00fcdischesLebeninBuchen20HermannSchmerbeck-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today the variety of books ranges from scientific papers to fundamental theological issues and cookery and photographic books\u2014around Judaism. \u201cAs a child, in the November Pogroms, I saw the furniture being thrown out of the windows of Jewish families,\u201d the former manager of the municipal library recalls the scene. He was born in 1934 in Karlsruhe but grew up in Mannheim. The family settled in the Odenwald in 1945, when his father took on the duty of mayor in Buchen. He hasn\u2019t forgotten the scenes he witnessed in Augartenstra\u00dfe in Mannheim, neither those with Jewish men and women queuing up along the wall of Mannheim Palace waiting for their deportation to Gurs internment camp in France in 1940. \u201cSomething like this must never happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wosonst.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wosonstj\u00fcdischesLebeninBuchen18.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9631\" src=\"https:\/\/wosonst.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wosonstj\u00fcdischesLebeninBuchen18.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wosonst.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wosonstj\u00fcdischesLebeninBuchen18.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wosonst.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wosonstj\u00fcdischesLebeninBuchen18-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wosonst.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wosonstj\u00fcdischesLebeninBuchen18-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hermann officially manages the library of Judaism. The management of the library foundation, however, is done by the town archivist Tobias-Jan Kohler. The foundation is responsible for events, new acquisitions and special projects such as the recent restoration of a hearse that the Jewish community had built for the district cemetery in B\u00f6dingen in 1911. This cemetery, like almost every Jewish cemetery in Germany is concealed by an iron grating door. To whom it has been opened, will see one of the most beautiful places in the Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis district: There are over 1,500 graves here, lining up along the gentle hills of a forest. It is centuries old and overgrown with moss\u2014far removed from the rest of the world. \u201cThe oldest gravestone is from the year 1628,\u201d explains Tobias-Jan, who was born in 1988, studied history in D\u00fcsseldorf and returned to his home region, the Odenwald, to run the Buchen archives.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wosonst.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wosonstj\u00fcdischesLebeninBuchen56.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9673 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wosonst.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wosonstj\u00fcdischesLebeninBuchen56.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wosonst.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wosonstj\u00fcdischesLebeninBuchen56.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wosonst.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wosonstj\u00fcdischesLebeninBuchen56-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wosonst.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wosonstj\u00fcdischesLebeninBuchen56-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a current project intending to give the many names of Jewish Buchen citizens back their faces, who were deported or murdered by or escaped the Nazi regime, by means of old glass plate photographs by the photographer Karl Wei\u00df,\u201d says the historian. The Jewish community in Buchen can be traced back to 1337. Tobias-Jan supposes that the burial ground in B\u00f6digheim dates back to the Middle Ages as well. Jacob\u2019s mother is buried here. And Jacob as well\u2014buried here unofficially in June 1939 after he had committed suicide. It was the last funeral in B\u00f6digheim. There is no Jewish community in Buchen anymore. Ruins of the Jewish ritual bath, the mikveh, were unearthed in the ground where once the Buchen synagogue stood and a memorial for the victims of the Nazi regime was erected. You can hear it ringing, for example, from the town\u2019s tower. Its bells play songs three times per day\u2014among them Jacob\u2019s most famous carnival song. <i>\u201cKerl wach uff, verge\u00df Dei\u2019 Plog\u2019 (Wake up, fellow, forget nuisance)\/ Vergess Dei\u2019 Not und Sorgen (Forget your need and sorrow)! Denk\u2019 da\u00df heut ein froher Tag, Und vergi\u00df das Morgen (Believe it is a joyful day, forget about tomorrow)!
