Whether elephants catch a cold, what operative matriarchy does to young men, and why Ghandi was once a \u201cterrorist\u201d \u2013 it is astonishing what you can learn when you are on local safari in the Zoo in Heidelberg. Animal keepers Tobias Kremer and Stefan Geretschl\u00e4ger run a young bulls\u2019 living community \u2013 the only one of its kind in Germany. <\/strong><\/p>\n

No, there is no docusoap yet about the young bulls sharing an enclosure in the Heidelberg Zoo. Strange, isn\u2019t it? Even though usually no TV station misses the opportunity to regularly film the youth of the animal kingdom \u2013 since this always does the trick. \u201cOf course,\u201d Tobias Kremer says, \u201cbut they usually don\u2019t show the animal keeper while he is digging around in a blocked drain.\u201d<\/p>\n

His and his colleague\u2019s educational style could be described as decidedly elephant-empathetic. Their living community for young bulls, which was founded in 2010 and at the moment consists of four elephants, has been established according to latest animal-pedagogical knowledge.<\/p>\n

2.43 m shoulder height and already an impressive trunk: Gandhi used to be a Danish hooligan, but today he is a really nice guy, and the boss of the young bulls\u2019 living community.<\/p><\/div>\n

The concern that working with animals of such enormous elephantine power could prove horribly dangerous is astonishingly quickly dissipated: There is no direct contact between elephant and animal keeper. How can that be? A fascinating multi-function wall ensures the keepers\u2019 safety in cases of clumsiness or sudden anger eruptions of the enormous animals. Yet it is not merely a safety barrier. The two animal attendants came up with the idea of this device themselves and they are convinced: \u201cThere is no better training wall,\u201d since they can open up all sorts of doors with it for the young bulls Gandhi, Ludwig, Yadanar and Tarak. The elephants then show their trunks, feet or ears and thus playfully train for medical controls.<\/p>\n

A metalworking manufacturer in Mannheim constructed the bulky device: 15 tons impact load should do the trick and somewhat calm a bull when the ten-year-old boss comes round the corner: Gandhi, 2.43 meters shoulder height, impressive trunk. With which he can even play the blues-harp \u2013 like a hard rocker, that is. A guy for whose pedicure a file is not used but instead a grinding machine. \u201cThat is gentler.\u201d Yes, indeed!<\/p>\n

Confronted with the sensitive undertaking of painting the ten-year-old bull capitulates. \u201cHe would simply eat the brush,\u201d Stefan Geretschl\u00e4ger says. Unlike Tarak, whose abstract expressionist studies can be admired here and there in the elephant house. In addition to the artistic programme, there is an abundance of activity space at the elephants\u2019 disposal. \u201cYou have to imagine that elephants out in the wild are busy searching food for 16 to 17 hours a day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ghandi used to be a Danish hooligan with slightly terrorist tendencies. Now he is a true pal. <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is why hay and straw are not just lovelessly thrown onto the floor but hanging in bins from the ceiling so that the pachyderm-gourmets have something to tear at. This means that the term \u201celephant enclosure\u201d is only a very insufficient description of what the gang of young bulls is being offered. It is in fact a near-nature recreational park endowed with swimming pool (\u201cswimming makes them tired\u201d) and sand basin (\u201cto throw over the back\u201d) and a gigantic strangler fig tree (\u201cto rub against\u201d).<\/p>\n

The indoor area as well as the inestimably vast outdoor terrain were created to share a close resemblance to a Southeast Asian river landscape where Asian elephants are at home. This has no longer anything to do with the dungeons surrounded by trenches one might recollect from one\u2019s own zoo excursions in childhood days. Dull back and forth swinging for sheer life-weariness is not what you will see here in this Garden of Eden.<\/p>\n

So, Gandhi came from Denmark to Heidelberg. \u201cAt the beginning, he was at times very aggressive in his new surroundings, quite the hooligan; you might say even a terrorist.\u201d Patient training transformed him into a really good fellow, even if one thing is very clear: Gandhi is the boss around here \u2013 and nobody else. The training programme in Heidelberg is exclusively based on rewards. With the help of a \u201ctarget\u201d, a bamboo stick, the keeper indicates what has to follow after the command. \u201cLay down!\u201d is one such command. When the colossus lies down, this is a great sign of the elephant\u2019s trust.<\/p>\n

Although he is one year older than the leader of the group, enclosure-mate Tarak is more like the wimp of the group. Typical artist, you might say. But he, too, learns. \u201cDevelopment of confidence,\u201d is one of the major learning contents. This is also true for the two younger ones, Kim Yadanar Min (6) and Ludwig (5). The latter is from Munich and loves his pretzels like any true Bavarian. Anyway, without bread any didactic process would be unthinkable: This is what the elephants are rewarded with, this is what the grey giants would do almost anything for. They call this success by means of food rewards.<\/p>\n

When he was 18 and on a trip to India, Stefan Geretschl\u00e4ger had the idea of working with elephants. In 1999, he started working at the zoo in Cologne. At the same time as Tobias Kremer, a genuine Franconian, who after a traineeship at a zoo knew at once what he wanted to do. It took him quite a while to cope with the change his move from the metropole at the Rhine to beautiful Heidelberg had brought about: \u201cA wonderful little city worth living in. Surrounded by a good deal of forest!\u201d<\/p>\n

Together our two protagonists journeyed through countries with a high density of elephants: Sri Lanka, Nepal, Burma, Thailand \u2026 . They learned everywhere, reflected on centuries of experience, in order to eventually develop their own reform approach. Kremer: \u201cElephants in Europe \u2013 this goes back to the history of menageries. And that was not about respecting the animal welfare.\u201d<\/p>\n

The right atmosphere is part of the deal these days. In the greenhouse warmth of the indoor area real bananas grow. But the pachyderms love apples and turnips, too. By the way, 60 percent of the food leaves the body from the other end undamaged. Some of the apples, which were not thoroughly chewed, stay intact. 30 tons of hay are munched away every year. And thus these fellows keep well and fit. \u201cThey don\u2019t catch a cold, thank God,\u201d Geretschl\u00e4ger informs us, \u201cthe pocks, herpes, a broken tusk or a limp \u2013 all of these things are possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

In order to understand why such an effort is being made with these four young elephants you have to know that the development takes a different turn in the wild: The little boys grow up with mummy, aunts, sisters. In puberty they start to fight and are sent away to wander around in the wild, where they meet other young bulls and found something like rambling clubs. And this is exactly what the living community in Heidelberg simulates. The aim of it is to eventually become a cool enough guy to impress the girls of another herd. \u201cWe cooperate with many zoos in Europe. At the age of about 15 such a bull goes on his journey and then eventually starts a family of his own somewhere else.\u201d This concept is part of the whole package of captive breeding which is necessary since the natural habitats are extremely shrinking.<\/p>\n

Until they move out, Ludwig, Yadanar, Tarak and Gandhi still have enough time to enjoy Heidelberg with all their senses. Their living community should make even skeptics happy who otherwise do not especially like zoos. And when you observe the two keepers carrying out their work, you would really love to cast them for an adventure film where they would save elephants, catch poachers and capture the hearts of the female audience \u2013 they could surely do all that.<\/p>\n
